It was so cold in Gunzburg in the morning, we kept hoping it would warm up little bit before we left. But the Sunday morning musicians were on their podium and playing as we waited.

So finally the sun decided to come out, but it was a teaser. We got packed up on our bicycles and within two minutes had a huge downpour. Once again we were looking for shelter.

The mission for the morning was to find real raincoats. The plastic ones that we were using, which were supposed to be used for emergency only, have been used to the extent that they are torn and patched with tape. So we got directions to a store and believe it or not found two raincoats at a price of €13 each. They are rubber, lightweight, have a hood and will keep us dry and warm.

It rained all morning long as we cycled to Ulm. Didn’t look at too much of the scenery as was as I was constantly blinking the water out of my eyes. Just as we arrived at Ulm, the weather cleared to a point where the sun came out and we could see some of the old city. It’s spectacular architecture in this old town. We were a bit surprised to see modern architect mixed in, but the old buildings are elegant. The cathedral tower which is the highest in Europe is being renovated at this time. There is scaffolding going up one side. It to an incredible structure.

From Gunzburg to Ulm, there are too long gravel sections. The first gravel section starts soon after leaving Gunzburg and it just so happens that they put fresh gravel on it so it was very thick and very slow riding. Rather than chance the same on the second section of gravel, we took the Highway road which was just a little bit longer but certainly faster.

After Ulm, there are several sections where the bike path meanders through some very lovely wetlands.

It was a straightforward ride to our campground in Ersingen.

The campground is on the Danube, and is part of the sports complex. There are no shops in the town to buy groceries so one needs to stop before hand if you want a beer or snacks or anything of that nature. There is however, a pizza restaurant at the campground area.

The campground sits on a pretty lake. The facilities are antiquated, but clean and the water is hot.

There are two campgrounds on the map in Bikeline. The second campground which is the one to the North and West does not exist anymore. There is only one campground and it is the one that shows on the Danube.

Our new raincoats did the trick. We figured if we bought real raincoats, the weather would have to clear up. Well by golly, it did after all. The rain stopped when we got to Ulm and we didn’t have any more rain for the rest of the day. The sun actually shone upon us first a short period of time. It’s still cold temperatures.
